Orthodontic treatment is priced as a course, not a product. You are buying eighteen months to three years of monthly appointments, adjustments, records and retention — which is why a single figure for “braces” is meaningless without knowing the case.
What changes the price
- Type of appliance. Metal braces are the most economical and the most versatile. Ceramic (tooth-coloured) brackets cost more and are less visible. Clear aligners cost the most, because each set is custom-manufactured.
- How complex the case is. Mild crowding corrected in ten months is a different proposition from a severe bite correction over three years, possibly with extractions or anchorage devices.
- Treatment time. Longer cases mean more visits, and visits carry cost.
- Retainers afterwards. Always required, sometimes quoted separately.
Metal braces
Still the workhorse, and for good reason. Fixed metal brackets can correct almost anything, including severe rotations and bite problems that aligners struggle with. They are the least expensive option and, because they are attached, they cannot be left out. The trade-off is visibility, more careful cleaning, and avoiding hard and sticky foods.
Ceramic braces
Mechanically similar to metal, with tooth-coloured brackets that are far less obvious in photographs. They cost more, are slightly more brittle, and the elastic ties can stain with coffee, tea and turmeric — worth knowing in an Indian kitchen. They are replaced at each adjustment, so staining is not permanent.
Clear aligners
A series of removable transparent trays, each moving the teeth a fraction of a millimetre. Nearly invisible, removable for eating and cleaning, and generally more comfortable. Two honest caveats: they must be worn 20 to 22 hours a day, and results depend entirely on that discipline — the appliance you leave in a drawer does nothing. And they are less predictable for complex bite corrections.
Choosing
Choose metal or ceramic if the case is complex, if cost matters, or if you know you will not keep trays in for 22 hours a day. Choose aligners if the correction is mild to moderate, your job makes visible braces awkward, and you are genuinely disciplined. An honest assessment will tell you which of these your case actually suits — not every case suits aligners, regardless of what advertising suggests.
Retainers are not optional
Teeth have memory. Without retention they drift back, and relapse after a successful two-year treatment is heartbreaking and avoidable. Budget for retainers from the start and wear them as instructed — usually full time briefly, then nightly, long term.
We give a written treatment plan with staged costs before anything is fitted, so you know the total and the payment schedule in advance.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best age for braces?
Around 12 to 14 is ideal, once most permanent teeth are through and growth can be used to help. But adults are treated routinely — teeth move at any age, treatment simply takes a little longer.
Do braces hurt?
Fitting does not hurt. There is soreness for two to four days afterwards and for a day or so after each adjustment, which paracetamol and soft food handle comfortably.
Can I get clear aligners for a severe bite problem?
Sometimes, but not always. Aligners are excellent for mild to moderate crowding and spacing. Severe rotations, large gaps and significant bite corrections are still more predictable with fixed braces.
How often will I need appointments?
Roughly every four to six weeks for fixed braces. Aligner patients are typically reviewed every six to eight weeks, changing trays at home in between.
