Does the Implant Brand Matter? Yes, and Here Is Why

You will live with this decision for decades. The part that matters most is the one you cannot see, and cannot easily change.

An implant is not one object. It is a titanium post in the bone, an abutment that connects to it, and a crown on top. The post and abutment must fit each other to tolerances measured in microns, and that connection is proprietary to the system used.

Why that matters in fifteen years

Implants last a long time, but components occasionally need replacing — a screw loosens, an abutment fractures, a crown needs remaking. With a well-established system, any competent dentist anywhere can identify it and order the part. With an obscure or discontinued one, the part may not exist. At that point a perfectly healthy implant in your jaw becomes unusable, and the only remedy is surgically removing it and starting again.

That is the real risk of a bargain implant, and it does not show up for years.

What separates systems

  • Clinical evidence. Established brands have decades of published follow-up. A new or unbranded implant may be perfectly well made, but nobody can tell you how it performs at fifteen years, because nobody has watched one for fifteen years.
  • Surface treatment. How the titanium surface is prepared affects how quickly and reliably bone fuses to it.
  • Connection design. Affects long-term bone stability around the implant neck and how often screws loosen.
  • Parts availability and support. Whether components will still be made in twenty years.
  • Range. Whether narrow or short implants are available for difficult sites.

What to ask before you agree

  • Which implant system are you using, by name? You are entitled to a straight answer, and to have it written on your record.
  • Will I be given an implant passport or card recording the brand, size and batch? Keep it; a future dentist will need it.
  • Does the quote include the abutment and crown? Together these are often more than half the total.
  • Is a 3D scan included in planning?
  • What is the guarantee, and what does it actually cover?

What matters even more than the brand

Honestly: planning and placement. A well-chosen implant placed in the wrong position is worse than a modest implant placed correctly, because position determines whether the final tooth is cleanable, whether it looks right, and how the bone behaves around it. A 3D scan, a planned position, and unhurried surgery matter more than the logo on the box.

And the two things most likely to lose you an implant are within your control: smoking, and not cleaning around it. Peri-implantitis is gum disease around an implant, and it is harder to treat than around a natural tooth.

Frequently asked questions

Does the implant brand really matter?

For the long term, yes. Components are proprietary, so if a screw or abutment ever needs replacing and the system is obscure or discontinued, the part may not be available and the implant may have to be removed.

What is an implant passport?

A card recording the brand, model, size and batch number of your implant. Keep it safely; any dentist treating you in future will need it to order matching components.

Why are some implant quotes so much cheaper?

Usually the system used, or because the quote covers only the post and not the abutment and crown, which together are often more than half the cost of the finished tooth.

How long do dental implants last?

With good cleaning and no smoking, large studies show the majority still functioning beyond 15 to 20 years. The crown on top may need replacing sooner than the implant itself.
