If you have not been to a dentist for a while, or you are new to Dehradun and looking for a clinic, the uncertainty about what happens is often the thing that delays the booking. Here is the whole sequence.
Before you arrive
Bring a list of any medicines you take, including supplements and blood thinners, and details of medical conditions — diabetes, heart conditions, previous surgery, allergies. This is not paperwork for its own sake. Blood thinners change how extractions are planned, diabetes affects gum healing, and some heart conditions require antibiotic cover before certain procedures.
If you have old X-rays or a treatment record from a previous dentist, bring those too.
The appointment itself
The conversation first. What brought you in, what is bothering you, what your history has been, and what you want out of it. This shapes everything after it, so it is worth being frank — including about anxiety, cost concerns, or a bad experience elsewhere.
The examination. Every tooth is checked for decay, cracks and failing fillings. The gums are assessed and pocket depths measured where indicated. The soft tissues — cheeks, tongue, floor of mouth, palate — are examined, and the neck felt. That last part is a cancer screen and takes about a minute. The bite and jaw joints are checked.
X-rays where needed. Not automatically. Bitewing X-rays show decay between teeth, which cannot be seen by eye, and a periapical film shows the root and surrounding bone. Digital sensors mean the dose is very low and the image is on screen immediately.
The findings, explained. You should be shown what has been found, not simply told. Photographs and X-rays on screen make this straightforward.
A written plan. In priority order: what is urgent, what is soon, what is optional, with the cost against each item. Nothing should be a surprise later.
How long and how much
A first examination usually takes 30 to 45 minutes. A scaling and polish, if you want it done the same day and it is appropriate, adds another 20 to 30 minutes. Treatment that needs anaesthetic is normally booked for a separate visit, so you are not rushed into anything on the first day.
Costs are confirmed before anything is started. Ask for the total, not the per-item price, if several things are planned — and ask whether a crown is included where a root canal is proposed, because that is the commonest reason estimates differ between clinics.

Frequently asked questions
How long does a first dental appointment take?
Usually 30 to 45 minutes for the examination, X-rays and discussion. A cleaning on the same day adds 20 to 30 minutes. Treatment needing anaesthetic is normally booked separately.
Will I need treatment on the first visit?
Not usually, and not without your agreement. The first visit is an examination and a written plan. The exception is if you are in pain, when we will address that the same day.
What should I bring to my first dental appointment?
A list of your medicines, details of any medical conditions and allergies, and any previous X-rays or records. Blood thinners and diabetes in particular change how treatment is planned.
Do I need an appointment or can I walk in?
An appointment is better, since it means time is set aside for a proper examination. If you are in pain, call 92868 98353 and we will fit you in the same day where possible.
