“How much for a root canal?” is a fair question with an annoying answer: it depends on which tooth, what state it is in, and what the price includes. Rather than quote a number that may not apply to you, it is more useful to explain what moves it.
Which tooth it is
This is the largest single factor, and it is anatomical rather than commercial. A front tooth (incisor or canine) usually has one canal. A premolar typically has one or two. A molar at the back has three or four, and they are often curved. More canals means more time, more instruments and more radiographs, so molar treatment costs meaningfully more than anterior treatment everywhere in India.
What condition the tooth is in
- A straightforward first-time root canal on a tooth with clear canals is the baseline.
- Calcified canals — narrowed by age or long-standing inflammation — take considerably longer to locate and negotiate.
- Re-treatment of a previously failed root canal costs more than the original, because the old filling material has to be removed first before the tooth can be cleaned properly.
- A tooth that is badly broken down needs a post and core to rebuild the centre before a crown can be fitted.
The part people forget: the crown
This is where quotes diverge most. A root-canal-treated back tooth almost always needs a crown afterwards. Removing the pulp leaves the tooth without its internal blood supply, and over the following years it becomes brittle. A molar left without a crown has a materially higher chance of splitting — and a split tooth usually cannot be saved at all.
So when comparing prices, ask directly: does this include the crown? A low root canal fee with the crown quoted separately afterwards is a common and entirely legal way to appear cheaper. Compare complete treatment against complete treatment.
What a proper quote should cover
Before treatment starts you should know: the number of visits, whether a crown is needed and what type, the total cost including the crown, and what happens if the tooth turns out to be more complicated than the X-ray suggested. We put all of that in front of a patient at the consultation rather than partway through.
Is it worth it against extraction?
Extraction is always cheaper on the day. The comparison that matters is what comes after. A gap left unfilled lets neighbouring teeth drift and the opposing tooth over-erupt, which changes your bite over years. Replacing the tooth properly with an implant and crown costs several times what saving it would have. Even a bridge means cutting down two healthy neighbouring teeth.
There is no material yet that outperforms a natural tooth root. If a tooth can be saved, saving it is nearly always the better long-term value — which is why an endodontist's default is to try.
Frequently asked questions
How many visits does a root canal take?
Most straightforward cases are completed in a single sitting of about 45 to 60 minutes. Teeth with active infection, or re-treatment of a previously failed root canal, may need two visits.
Is a crown always necessary after a root canal?
For back teeth, effectively yes — they take the full force of chewing and become brittle without a blood supply. Front teeth with only a small access cavity can sometimes be restored with a filling alone.
Why is a molar root canal more expensive than a front tooth?
A front tooth usually has one straight canal; a molar has three or four, often curved. It is more time, more instrumentation and more radiographs, not a different price list.
Does dental insurance cover root canal treatment in India?
Most standard health policies exclude routine dentistry, though some corporate and top-up plans include it. Check your policy wording, and ask us for an itemised estimate to submit.
