Dentures have a poor reputation earned almost entirely by badly fitted ones. A denture that moves when you eat, clicks when you speak, or rubs a sore patch is not a denture problem — it is a fit problem, and fit is where the cost difference lies.
The options, cheapest first
- Acrylic partial denture — a plate carrying one or more teeth, held by clasps. The least expensive option and the quickest to make. Bulkier, and it rests on the gum rather than on the teeth.
- Cast metal partial — a slim cobalt-chrome framework. Much thinner, stronger, less palate coverage, so it feels far less intrusive and tastes less of plastic. Costs more and takes more visits.
- Complete denture — a full arch when no teeth remain. The upper usually holds well by suction; the lower floats on a narrow ridge and is the one that gives trouble.
- Implant-supported overdenture — two or more implants with clip attachments the denture snaps onto. The single biggest improvement available for a loose lower denture: it stops moving, and you can eat properly again.
- Flexible dentures — comfortable and unbreakable, but they cannot be relined easily and are not suitable for every case.
What drives the price
Number of teeth, the framework material, the quality of the teeth used, and the number of fitting visits. That last one matters: a well-made denture takes several appointments — impressions, a bite registration, a try-in in wax where you see and approve the teeth before they are finished, then fitting and adjustments. A denture made in one or two visits skips the steps where problems get caught.
The cost nobody mentions: bone
When teeth are removed, the bone that held them slowly shrinks. A denture resting on that ridge keeps fitting worse as the years pass, which is why dentures need relining every few years and remaking eventually. Implants are the only option that puts load back into the bone and slows that loss, which is part of why an implant-supported denture, though more expensive at the start, often costs less over fifteen years than a series of remade conventional ones.
Settling in
Expect two to four weeks of adjustment with any new denture: extra saliva, altered speech for a few days, and one or two sore spots that need easing. That is normal and adjustments are part of the treatment, not an extra. Pain that does not settle after adjustment is not.
Before you agree to a price
Ask how many visits are included, whether there is a wax try-in before the teeth are finalised, how many adjustment appointments are covered, and what a future reline will cost. Those four answers explain most of the gap between a cheap denture and a good one.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my lower denture keep moving?
The lower jaw offers a narrow ridge and an active tongue, so a lower denture has far less to hold onto than an upper. Two implants with clip attachments solve this more reliably than any adhesive.
How often do dentures need replacing?
The denture itself may last years, but the jaw beneath it keeps changing shape. Most need relining every two to three years and remaking around every five to seven, sooner if the fit has loosened.
Can I get teeth the same day my teeth are removed?
Yes, with an immediate denture, fitted straight after extraction so you are never without teeth. It will need relining once healing settles, because the gum shrinks as it heals.
Are implant-supported dentures worth the extra cost?
For a loose lower denture, most patients say yes. It stops the movement, restores chewing, and slows the bone loss that makes conventional dentures fit worse over time.
