Patients routinely get quotes for the same treatment that differ by a factor of two or three, and understandably conclude that someone is overcharging. Sometimes that is true. More often the two quotes are for different things.
Differences that are real
- Materials. A zirconia crown and a basic metal-ceramic crown are not the same product. Nor are implant systems: a well-researched brand with decades of data and guaranteed parts availability costs more than an unbranded one, and matters in twenty years when a component needs replacing.
- The dental laboratory. Invisible to you, and one of the largest real cost differences. A skilled technician produces crowns that fit, seal and match. A cheap lab produces work that catches floss and fails early.
- Time. A denture made over five visits with a wax try-in costs more than one made in two, because it fits better. An unhurried appointment costs more than a rushed one.
- Sterilisation and single-use items. Class B autoclaves, proper instrument cycles and single-use burs and needles have genuine running costs.
- Who does the work. A specialist's time costs more than a general dentist's, and for complex cases is often cheaper overall because it works the first time.
- Diagnostics. A 3D scan before implant surgery costs money and prevents expensive surprises.
Differences that are not real
The commonest is an incomplete quote. A low root canal price with the crown quoted separately afterwards. An implant price that turns out to exclude the abutment and crown — which can be more than half the total. A denture price that does not include the adjustments it will certainly need. None of this is illegal, and all of it makes the headline number look smaller.
The second is treatment you do not need. A full-mouth plan proposed at a first visit for someone who came in about one tooth deserves a second opinion.
How to compare properly
Ask each clinic for the same four things and the comparison becomes simple:
- The total for the finished result, not the first stage.
- An itemised written estimate, naming materials and brands.
- The number of visits included, and what a follow-up adjustment costs.
- What happens if it fails within a year or two.
Cheapest is a reasonable choice sometimes
For a simple filling in a back tooth, the difference between clinics is mostly time and materials, and a competent economical option is perfectly sensible. For anything that has to last — crowns, implants, full-arch work — the cost of redoing it is almost always higher than the gap between the quotes. That is the calculation worth making, rather than comparing two numbers with no idea what sits behind them.
Frequently asked questions
Why is one clinic's implant price half another's?
Usually the implant system, and whether the quote includes the abutment and crown, which can be more than half the total. Ask for the brand by name and the price of the finished tooth.
Is a more expensive dentist always better?
No. Price reflects materials, laboratory, time and expertise, but it can also reflect location and marketing. Ask what the extra buys; a clear answer usually means a real difference.
Should I get a second opinion on a large treatment plan?
For anything extensive or expensive, yes, and no reasonable dentist will object. Take your X-rays and the written plan with you so the second opinion is based on the same evidence.
What should an itemised estimate include?
Each procedure separately, the materials or brands used, the number of visits, what happens if it fails, and a clear total for the finished result rather than the first stage.
